Stay safe through the cold season:

With a drysuit, you can paddle in cold conditions and, if you fall in, you’re protected from cold shock caused by suddenly entering cold water. A drysuit keeps you dry with its waterproof material and watertight seals at the wrists and neck. If you do capsize, you’ll be protected from shock and have time to get back to dry land.

Drysuits with a neoprene neck seal are much more comfortable to wear than those with a latex seal. Some moisture may seep in through the neoprene over time. However, this makes for a very comfortable suit for touring by paddle, both on a SUP and in a kayak.

Drysuits with a latex neck seal are completely watertight, so they’re preferred by paddlers who paddle whitewater or in rough conditions at sea. Some people find latex restrictive; in that case, we recommend a suit with a neoprene / Glideskin seal instead. We also recommend wearing a neoprene cap to protect your head if you suddenly fall into the water.

When paddling a SUP, always wear a leash so the board stays close if you fall into the water. Wearing a life jacket ensures that you’ll be able to return to the surface. Also practice getting back onto your board quickly while wearing your winter gear - the suit will protect you from cooling down in cold water for a few minutes, but it isn’t designed for prolonged immersion. Depending on the insulating layer you wear under the suit and the water temperature, your body may cool down. It’s also safer to paddle with at least one other person.
